Famous for year-round Pacific Coast surf and a friendly, relaxed vibe, Santa Teresa and neighboring Mal Pais attract visitors from all over the world who come to surf, relax, do yoga and enjoy one of Costa Rica’s most stunning tropical beaches. Walking down the nearly white sand beaches, you see no high rises, only trees, jungle, sand and surf. Facing almost due west, the sunsets are sensational.

Halfway through the 2014 Costa Rica surfing season, there is no clear leader in any of the divisions, except perhaps for the women. Ten-time national champion Lisbeth Vindas of Jacó is on a winning streak for the season (3-1), having won the Marley Cup in Dominical in March. For the men, pro Costa Rica surfer Carlos “Cali” Muñoz swooped in from a three-month international tour to win the fourth 2014 Olympus National Surfing Circuit competition. Making national surfing history, 12-year-old Malakai Martinez of Tamarindo won first place in both the under-16 and under-18 Boys’ Division, the youngest surfer ever to do so.
Malakai and the rest of the Costa Rica National Juniors Surf Team, trained by three-time Costa Rica national surf champion, Gilbert Brown, are currently competing in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Ecuador from April 5-13. Check out the live action here on the official ISA website.
Home beach advantage at Santa Teresa will go to Ramón Taliani, who took second place behind Muñoz at the Marley Cup. Surfer Arisha Griotti will represent Santa Teresa for the women; she placed fourth in the last national competition.
Playa Santa Teresa presents beach breaks, point breaks and high swells for experienced surfers. Playa Carmen and Playa Hermosa, on either side of Santa Teresa, are better suited for beginners. Up-to-date surf conditions for Santa Teresa are reported daily by Magic Seaweed.
